Auckland | Rain affects the opening day schedule
The ASB Classic in Auckland had its opening day disrupted by rain and consequently there was virtually no action on the courts.
The first main draw match on Centre Court was between 18-year-old Marketa Vondrousova from the Czech Republic and Croatian Petra Martic.
Martic, world ranked 90, reached the fourth round of the French Open and Wimbledon last year, proved too experienced for the teenager 7-6 6-3 who also had to contend with breaks for the weather.
“I felt like I had momentum and playing well.” Martic said of the 50-minute rain break. “I didn’t like the rain to be honest, but I tried to stay focused and luckily it ended up well.”
Only one other match was completed and it saw Su-Wei Hsieh beat Nao Hibino 6-0 6-3.
Tuesday should be a much more exciting day and hopefully a drier one with Caroline Wozniacki playing Madison Brengle in the evening feature match.
The day session sees Agnieszka Radwanska take on the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Mai, word ranked 71.
