Beijing Open | Halep trounces Sharapova
Simona Halep, the second seed at this year’s China Open, trounced Maria Sharapova for a place in the quarter-finals in Beijing.
It was a milestone victory for the Romanian for she had lost all her previous seven matches against the former world number one from Russia.
Sharapova, ranked 104 and consequently a wild card entry for the event as she continues her attempts to rebuild her career following a 15-month drug suspension, was no match for Halep who went through to the last eight comfortably 6-2 6-2.
The Romanian sprung out of the blocks and proved too much for Sharapova who was broken to love in the opening game and fell further back in the sixth game as Halep stormed through the first set in just 33-minutes.
Halep held a break point again in the first game of the second but Sharapova fought back but it all proved in vain as Halep took the third game to set her course towards the finish line as she sets her sights on her second title of the season.
In other action, the French Open champion dispatched Sam Stosur in straight sets to cement her place in Singapore.
The Aussie, a former French Open finalist, had her comeback to the tour following an injury, curtailed by 6-3 7-5 loss.
In other early second-round results, Frenchwoman Carolina Garcia beat Belgian Elise Mertens 7-6(4) 6-4.
