Acapulco | Norrie reaches the semis
Cameron Norrie has reached the semi-finals of the Mexican Open where he will take on the world number three, Alexander Zverev for a tilt at the Mexican Open title in Acapulco.
It is amazing, it’s going to be my first semi-finals of an ATP 500, I’m excited Cameron Norrie
Norrie, the world number 64, beat American Mackenzie McDonald 6-3 6-2.
The 23-year-old broke in the third game of the match following a marathon opening game which set the tone. He also broke him in the ninth game to secure the opening set.
The second set followed much the same pattern, with Norrie saving two break points to come out on top and seal what looked like a comfortable win, 6-3 6-2.
“I was nervous. It was a big opportunity for both of us, but I played really solid today,” Norrie said after his victory, adding: “It is amazing, it’s going to be my first semi-finals of an ATP 500, I’m excited.”
But he has a big task ahead of him when he takes on the second seed from Germany, who ended the teenager Alex de Minaur’s run 6-4 6-4
“I’ve got nothing to lose tomorrow and all the pressure is on [Zverev]” Norrie said
