Acapulco | Vekic ousts Konta
British number one Jo Konta lost to Croatian Donna Vekic at the quarter-final stage of the women’s draw of the Mexican Open in Acapulco.
The Eastbourne resident was dispatched 6-3 7-5, but put up a hard fight against the number three seed who seemed to have the edge despite a nervy start leading to the two losing their opening service games but it was Vekic who gained control with a break for 5-3 to go on and serve out the first set.
Seeded eight, Konta the proceeded to lose her serve again when she opened the second set but recovered to level at 2-all and again to take a 5-3 lead only to falter and lose the next four games of the quarter-final to allow Vekic to advance for her third semi-final of the year after 76- minutes on court.
There the Croat will face China’s Yafan Wang who dispatched the Brazilian qualifier Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3 6-4
In other action American Sofia Kenin beat former world number one Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 6-4 4-6 7-5 and Canada’s Bianca Andreescu beat the seventh seed from China Saisai Zheng 7-6(3) 6-1.
