Bad Homburg | Kasatkina, Kerber and Halep march on

At the Bad Homburg Open presented by Engel & Voelkers, a WTA 250 event, top seed Daria Kasatkina reached the quarter-finals, outlasting Germany’s Jule Niemeier, 6-1 3-6 6-1, on Tuesday, while Caroline Garcia from France also made it into the Last 8 with a 6-3 6-4 win over qualifier Liudmila Rakhimova.

Completing the 1st-round of matches, Germany Angelique Kerber, the defending champion and 3rd seed here, dispatched Anastasia Gasanova, 6-2 6-2, after being made to wait overnight when a rain-delayed schedule forced the match to be suspended midway through the first set on Monday.

Next, Kerber takes on Lucia Bronzetti from Italy in the Round of 16.

Romania’s Simona Halep, the No 4 seed, rallied to beat Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic, 4-6 6-3 6-4, after a 2 hour 18 minute battle, and she lines up against Slovenian Tamara Zidansek for a place in the quarters.

Canada’s Bianca Andreescu, a former US Open champion, took down Italian 7th seed Martina Trevisan from Italy, 6-3 6-1, breaking her opponent 6 times on 9 chances in the match.

The 22-year-old only faced 2 break points, and was unable to save either of them, but Trevisan, a semifinalist at the French Open earlier this month, struggled with her serve throughout the 1 hour 15 minute match in which she committed 4 double-faults and converted just 38.2 per cent of her first serve points.

Andreescu will next face Britain’s Katie Swan for a place in the quarter-finals, after the World No 233 moved on with a 2-6 6-4 6-2 upset of American Sloane Stephens on Sunday.
