Barcelona | Rafa pulls out again

Bad news for the Barcelona Open, an ATP 500 event which starts on Sunday – Rafa Nadal has still not fully recovered from the hip injury he picked up during his loss at the Australian Open.

The 12-time Barcelona winner hasn’t played since that second -round defeat to MacKenzie McDonald in Melbourne, but is till determined to play the French Open where the 22-time grand slam champion is going for a record 15th title.

In the interim, the Madrid and Rome Master events still remain on his schedule in his build up to Roland Garros, but as things stand, his appearance at either of them must now be doubtful.

The 36-year-old Spanish icon said he had still not recovered full fitness from the hip flexor injury he sustained three months ago and which kept him out of the Monte Carlo Open which is currently being contested.

“I am still not ready and so I continue my preparation process for the return to competition,” he tweeted.

“Barcelona is a special tournament for me because it is my club by adoption and because playing at home is always a unique feeling,” added the former world No.1 who has slumped to 15 in the world rankings.
