Den Bosch | Ruusuvuori produces the upset of the day.

For the first time in his career, Finland’s Emil Rusuvuori has reached the semi-finals of a grass court tournament and he did it in some style by eliminating the second-seeded Jannik Sinner in straight sets at the Libema Open, an ATP 250 event being held in s-Hertongebosch in Holland.

Before this I’m 0-5 against him head-to-head. It’s a difficult match always to go after him, but I just gave my everything and today I was playing very well and able to get the win, so I’m very happy Emil Ruusuvuori

The semi-final line up is quite a mixed bag with only one seed represented and that is Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor at No.6 who faces the Finn for a place in the final, and an all-Aussie clash between Lucky Loser Rinky Hijacka and Jordan Thompson.

The biggest upset of the day was the Ruusuvuori 6-3 6-4 win over Sinner for his first victory over the Italian in six meetings, an encounter he dominated over 80-minutes without dropping a single point on his first serve successfully claiming all 29.

“It was a great performance overall. He’s a hell of a player,” the 24-year-old Ruusuvuori told the ATP Tour website on reaching his seventh career semi-final. “Before this I’m 0-5 against him head-to-head. It’s a difficult match always to go after him, but I just gave my everything and today I was playing very well and able to get the win, so I’m very happy.”

He will have to maintain that level of play when he faces Griekspoor who is carrying the home crowd’s expectations and, as he only seeded player left, has been left wearing the favourite’s mantle.

The 26-year-old Dutchman took out the fourth seed from Australia, Alex De Minaur 4-6 6-3 6-4 in one-hour and 50-minutes hitting 14 aces and 4 double faults but saved 13 of 14 break chances he faced to reach his third career semi-final.

Despite losing their top player, the Aussies are guaranteed a representative in the final after Thompson overcame Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 5-7 7-6(2) 6-2 and Hijikata ousted Mackenzie McDonald from the US 5-7 6-3 6-1.

Both Saturday semifinals are first time meetings.
