British No.1 Dan Evans is through to the last eight of the Dubai Tennis Championship after saving three match points to outlast France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert
Following his excellent victory over Fabio Fognini 24-hours earlier, Evans, ranked 37, initially struggled to get going in the first set but fought back from 5-2 to claim it and then broke Herbert at the start of the second.
However the Frenchman, ranked 79, responded in the same manner by winning next six of the next eight games to level and force a decider.
It was very much nip-and-tuck in the third even in the eventual tie-break where Evans trailed 4-6 and 6-7 but his dogged spirit and bulldog determination saw him through to a 7-5 3-6 7-6(7) victory after two hours and 46 minutes.
Evans’ delight was clear as he fist-pumped the air at having made the quarter-finals where the Russian sixth seed Andrey Rublev awaits after he defeated Filip Krajinovic 7-6(3) 6-0.
Meanwhile Stefanos Tsitsipas and Novak Djokovic are now one match away from their scheduled meeting in the final. Tsitsipas, seeded 2, defeated Alexander Bublik 7-6(1) 6-4 while the world No.1 Djokovic ssept Philipp Kohlschreiber aside 6-3 6-1.
The Greek now faces Jan-Lennard Struff while the top seeded Serb takes on the 7th seed Karen Khachanov for their semi-final places.
