Estoril | Thiem beats the rains.

Last year’s quarter finalist, Austrian Dominic Thiem dispatched Germany’s Maximilian Marterer in the opening round of his Estoril Open campaign in Portugal 6-1 6-7(3).

The 2020 US Open champion shrugged off a wrist injury to secure a second-round match with the French veteran Richard Gasquet, a Lucky Loser given a first-round bye!

However, the rains arrived after the completion of two other matches which saw Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut upsetting the sixth seeded Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia, 6-1 7-5 and local boy Nuno Borges recovering well to take out French qualifier Lucas Pouille 0-6 7-6(6) 6-3 to the delight of the home crowd.

Three matches were suspended mid-play for resumption for 24-hours but persistent rain wiped out play on Tuesday so organisers now hope the first round will be completed on Wednesday.

Amongst those hoping to play are seventh seed Gael Monfils against wild card Henrique Rocha, and Arthur Fils versus Joao Fonesca who is competing in the final tournament of his career. Brazilian Fonseca, a quarter finalist in Rio de Janeiro last February, faces 27-year-old British qualifier, Jan Choinski in the opening match of the day on stadium court.
