London | GB draw Colombia in Qualifying Round of 2023 Davis Cup

The draw for next year’s Davis Cup was made by the ITF in Malaga last weekend and pitched Great Britain against Colombia in the Qualifying Round scheduled for February, the week after the Australian Open, with the Colombians hosting the tie for the first meeting between the two nations in competitive play.

The winners will then progress to the Group Stage which will be played in September at venues yet to be confirmed.

Britain will be favourites to go through with a team which can be drawn from the top 50 while their host’s best player, Daniel Elahi Galan is currently only ranked at 69 and their No.2, Nicolas Mejia, is down in the 300s.

However, the Colombians do have a world beating doubles pairing, Robert Farah and Juan Sebastian Cabal, the 2019 champions of both Wimbledon and the US Open which could prove vital in the five -rubber tie which is played over a weekend.

At this year’s competition, Britain received a wild card into the Group stages where they just failed to advance to the 2022 Finals in Malaga, finishing third behind the USA and Netherlands resulting in the team dropping down into the Qualifying stage for next year’s competition.

Their hosts lost their qualifying tie against the USA last March but booked their place in the 2023 qualifiers with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Turkey last September.
