London | McEnroe backs Murray for a third title

John McEnroe reckons Andy Murray has a shot at securing his third Wimbledon title this year.

If he’s fit, I believe he is one of the contenders. I actually believe he’d be one of a handful of guys who could win it. He’s got loads of experience and he knows how to play better than almost anyone on that surface John McEnroe

Murray, 35, the former world No.1 and US Open champion, has battled back from long-term hip problems.

And legend McEnroe reckoned the Brit, who has climbed to world 51 and reached the recent Stuttgart final, has a chance.

BBC commentator McEnroe said: “If he’s fit, I believe he is one of the contenders. I actually believe he’d be one of a handful of guys who could win it. He’s got loads of experience and he knows how to play better than almost anyone on that surface.

“He’s looking at Rafa Nadal and Novak (Djokovic), he’s got to be thinking he’s going to have one last hurrah, I think that’s entirely conceivable. I’m amazed that he’s moving as well as he is.

“If you’ve got a metal hip (which Murray has), that would tell me that you wouldn’t move as well, but I noticed a definite improvement this year.”

Murray is back with Ivan Lendl, a playing rival to McEnroe, as his coach.

Czech Lendl helped guide Murray to his three majors, two Olympics and his global No.1 spot.

McEnroe said: “I saw Ivan recently, I don’t think he’d do it if he didn’t believe Andy could win another one, I honestly don’t believe he would be part of this. So, it’s sort of exciting because it puts Andy back in the mix, which I think he deserves.”
