London | WTA Roundup – Navarro upsets Teichmann in Strasbourg as  Fernandez advances in Rabat

Strasbourg, France | WTA 250 Internationaux de Strasbourg – American Emma Navarro came from a set down to upset No 8 seed Jil Teichmann from Switzerland, 2-6 6-3 6-2, in the 2nd-round of the Internationaux de Strasbourg and advance to her first WTA quarter-final.

The American had cracked the Top 100 two weeks prior, and the result was her 6th Top 100 win of 2023.

Meanwhile, top seed Magda Linette from Poland also came from a set down to open her campaign in Strasbourg, defeating Spain’s Cristina Bucsa in the 1st-round, 4-6 6-2 6-2.

Russia’s Anna Blinkova reached her 2nd WTA quarter-final of 2023 after edging Anna-Lena Friedsam from Germany, 6-4 7-6(11), in an overtime second-set breaker after saving 2 set points before converting her 5th match point, while home favourite, Clara Burel, got past the tricky Kaja Kanepi from Estonia, 7-5 7-6(0) scoring a bagel breaker.

Rabat, Morocco | WTA 250 Grand Prix Son Altesse Royale La Princesse Lalla Meryem – Completing the 1st-round of matches on Tuesday, No 5 seed Leylah Fernandez from Canada staved off a valiant come-back attempt by Spanish lucky loser Angela Fita Boluda, 6-3 6-4, who was playing in her first WTA main draw.

Tatjana Maria, the 8th seed from Germany, overcame 19-year-old qualifier Tatiana Prozorova from Russia, 7-5 6-7(5) 6-0, who was playing her first WTA main draw, needing to go the distance despite leading 5-1 in the second-set tiebreak,  and she will next take on Lucia Bronzetti from Italy, a 6-4 7-6(4) winner over Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson.

Former World No 60 Cagla Buyukakcay from Turkey claimed her first WTA main-draw win since Bucharest 2017 with an upset of No 7 seed Linda Fruhvirtova from the Czech Republic, her first Top 100 win since Roland Garros 2017, where she beat Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the 1st-round.

Kamilla Rakhimova needed to come from 3-1 down in the second set to defeat 16-year-old Moroccan wild-card Malak El Allami, who was making her WTA main draw debut, winning 6-3 6-3.

The Russian will meet 4th-seeded Alycia Parks after the American took out qualifier Anastasia Tikhonova, also from Russia, 6-3 7-6(5).

In other Tuesday results, Austrian Julia Grabher defeated Belgian Ysaline Bonaventure, 6-7(3) 6-4 6-2, and Hungarian qualifier Timea Babos dispatched Irina Khromacheva, 6-4 6-1, and will playe 2nd-seeded Sloane Stephens in the round of 16.
