Naomi Osaka, who pulled out of the Australian Open just days ago, has now announced that she is pregnant and will be skipping the 2023 season.

Posting the news on social media late on Wednesday, the former World No 1 and 4-time Grand Slam title holder said: “Can’t wait to get back on the court but here’s a little life update for 2023 little life update for 2023.

“The past few years have been interesting to say the least, but I find that its the most challenging times in life that may be the most fun.

“These few months away from the sport has really given me a new love and appreciation for the game I’ve dedicated my life to.

“I realize that life is so short and I don’t take any moments for granted, everyday is a new blessing and adventure. I know that I have so much to look forward to in the future, one thing I’m looking forward to is for my kid to watch one of my matches and tell someone, ‘that’s my mom,’ haha,”.

“2023 will be a year full of lessons for me, and I hope I’ll see you guys at the start of the next one cause I will be back at the Australian Open 2024.

“Love you all infinitely. I don’t think there’s a perfectly correct path to take in life but I always felt that if you move forward with good intentions you’ll find your way eventually.”

25-year old Osaka, who has been in a relationship with the rapper Cordae since 2019, has not played a competitive match since September and pulled out of this month’s Australian Open last week without specifying why.

She shared an image of an ultrasound from December, which made the reason clear.

Once regarded as a force that would dominate women’s tennis, Osaka won two Australian Opens and two US Opens in the space of 3 years, but then had struggles with her mental health public, which surfaced at Roland-Garros in the spring of 2021.

Becoming the face of the Tokyo Olympics that summer amplified those issues, and she decided to take a hiatus from professional tennis, stating she wanted to become an advocate for mental health in sports.

When she returned to the match court last year, Osaka never found the consistency of her early career, even on her favoured hard courts.

Nevertheless, her global appeal, particularly in American and Japan, has turned her into the highest-earning female athlete in the world.

Since her ranking has dropped to No 47 in the world, many have speculated whether Osaka was walking away from the sport, but it seems her absence will be temporary.
