Los Cabos | Evans through but Draper stumbles

Dan Evans, the British No.2, defeated fifth seed Roman Safiullin of Russia 6-2 6-4 to reach the second round of the Los Cabos Open (Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo) in Mexico but his countryman, Jack Draper, fell to Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis 4-6 7-6(5) 6-4 who goes on to face Evans in the next round.

For Evans it was only his second win of the season in three tournaments while the Draper loss was a disappointment as he started the season so well by reaching the final in Adelaide. He currently has a 5-3 win-loss record for the season.

Meanwhile Australian Rinky Hijikata, the world No.79, posted his sixth win of the season when he upset sixth seeded Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia, 6-3 7-6(2) as he chases his third quarter final of the season but the American qualifier Aleksander Kovacevic, a 6-1 6-4 winner over fellow countryman and qualifier Brandon Holt, stands in his way.

Another Australian, eighth seeded Jordan Thompson, also marched into the second round with a comfortable 6-4 6-3 win over Mexican wild card Ernseto Escobedo saving four of five break points during the one-hour, 44-minute encounter.

He next plays, for a third consecutive quarter final, 22-year-old American qualifier Emilio Nava, a 6-4 6-3 winner over Argentine wild card and former top-tenner, Diego Schwartzman.

Victory would give Thompson’s his 10th win of the year, putting him more than halfway to topping the 19 wins he had last season.

Recent Dallas finalist Marcos Giron of the US, the world No.44, has now won eight of his past 10 matches after defeating Japan’s Taro Daniel 6-4 7-5 in their first meeting.

Portugal’s Nuno Borges continued his breakout year with a 7-6(2) 6-2 win over German Dominik Koepfer, will next face seventh-seeded Australian Max Purcell who outlasted the Italian Matteo Arnaldi 6-4 4-6 6-4.
