Metz | Hurkacz on track to retain title

Second seed Hubert Hurkacz continued his defence of the Moselle Open title in Metz with a dominant quarter final performance to oust Arthur Rinderknecht of France 6-3 6-2.

After dropping seven games in his opening match against Austria’s DominicThiem, the Pole required just over an hour to secure his victory saving the only break point against him at 1-2 in the second set before reeling off the last five games which included the last 14 points.

Hurkacz has dropped one place to No. 11 in the world ranking listings this week but can move ahead of Jannik Sinner and back into the Top 10 by reaching this week’s final and could overtake Alexander Zverev for eighth place in the Race To Turin by retaining his title.

Standing in his way is Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego who cruised past America’s Sebastian Korda 6-4 6-4 to maintain his record of not dropping a set this week.

In the evening session, Stan Wawrinka continued his run by winning his fifth consecutive match of the week having come through qualifying and then dispatched the former world No.1 Daniil Medvedev in the second round.

The Swiss, a three-time grand slam champion, was made to work for his 6-4 4-6 7-6(5) victory by Mikael Ymer, who had to regroup in the third after the Swede recovered from an early break to force a tie-break which Wawrinka just edged.

He will next face seventh seed Alexander Bublik, who closed the evening session with a 6-3 5-7 6-4 win over the fourth seed Danish youngster Holger Rune.

Bublik lost the second set after leading 5-3, then saved a break point early in the third before claiming the decisive break to lead 3-2 to eventually claim victory on his second match point.
