Munich | Rune opens defence with a solid win

Holger Rune, champion the BMW Open champion of the last two years, started his 2024 campaign for a third title in Munich with a 6-4 6-2 win ove Danile Elabi Galan of Colombia.

The Munich title was the first of his career so the young Dane who went on to collect three more on the tour, has fond memories of the ATP 250 event.

His opening match was unremarkable except hat it was disrupted by snow and rain as the weather is proving to be quite disruptive for the tournament this week.

Rune needed only one break in the opening set to establish control and while Galan is a solid player, the 20-year-old Dane was clearly in a higher class.

Rune’s serve proved to be one of his strongest weapons as he hit four aces and steamrolled through his games and sweep into a 2-0 lead in the second which he extended to 4-0.

While Galan was able to stop that run he couldn’t turn the tide, capitulating after 99-minutes.

Also through are Talor Fritz, Jan-Lennard Struff and Felix Auger Aliassime. Fritz the third seed from the US, breezed to a 6-3 6-1 win over Spanish qualifier Alejandro Moro Canas while, Struff , seeded four from Germany, outlasted Ditchman Botic Van De Zandschulp 7-6(0) 6-4 and Canada’s Auger-Aliassime, seeded five, notched up a 6-3 6-2 win over Taro Daniel of Japan.

Cristian Garin of Chile and Swiss qualifier Marc-Andre Huesler also won their matches.
