The former world No.8, currently ranked 39, was beaten by Jack Pinnington Jones, a 21-year-old sitting at 489 in word terms, 1-6 6-4 6-4.

After a slow start from the young Brit, who lost the opening five games of the match, quickly grew in confidence once his serve had settled and adopted a more offensive game against the former Wimbledon semi-finalist.

He came back from a break down in the decider and saved seven break points as he went on to seal the win on his first match point after two hours and 20 minutes.

“It was a tough match, I had a lot of opportunities in the second set as well a lot of break points in the third,” Norrie admitted.

“But I’m happy for him and he deserved the win today and hopefully he can go further.
