Prague | Cristian up-ends defending champ Bouzkova at first hurdle

Home grown defending champion Marie Bouzkova failed to get her campaign under way at the Livesport Prague Open on Monday, when she was upset in her opening round by Jaqueline Cristian, 6-4 4-6 6-4.

Bouzkova, who was born and raised in Prague, won this WTA 250 hard court tournament last year, which was her first tour singles title.

Cristian, who is unseeded and comes from Romania, beat the Czech for the fist time in their 4 encounters, breaking serve 8 times out of 14 chances to win after 2 hours and 47 minutes on court.

Following the departure of Bouzkova, 6 more Czechs are vying for a spot in Round of 16, including Barbora Strycova, Linda Noskova, Barbora Palicova and Lucie Havlickova.

Meanwhile, 7th-seed Xinyu Wang from China also fell at the first hurdle, as Slovakian qualifier Viktoria Hruncakova (née Kuzmova) rallied for a 3-6 6-3 7-6(5) win, taking 2 hours and 18 minutes.

In an all-Ukrainian encounter, No 8 seed Kateryna Baindl defeated Dayana Yastremska, 6-4 2-6 6-2, in 2 hours 9 minutes.

In other 1st-round matches, Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch beat Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria, 6-2 6-4, and Japan’s Nao Hibino edged out Italy’s Sara Errani, 7-5 3-6 6-4.

No 6 seed Alizé Cornet of France, however, was leading her Czech opponent, Havlickova, 6-2, 4-2 when their match was suspended overnight.

British hopes in the singles lie with Heather Watson, who takes on Germany’s Jule Niemeier on Tuesday, while two British pairs are competing in the doubles.

On Monday, No 2 seeds Alicia Barnett & Olivia Nichols got off the mark with a 6-3 6-4 win over Germany’s Vivian Heisen & Olivia Tjandramulia from Australia, but Naiktha Bains & Maia Lumsden lost to Julia Lohoff & Niemeier, 6-4 7-5.

Qualifier Viktoria Hruncakova powered past Wang Xinyu in the 1st-round of the Livesport Prague Open, holding off the No 7 seed in a third-set tiebreak after leading 5-3.
