Raducanu lights up British hearts

Emma Raducanu has received a boost from Andy Murray.

It was go-go-go for Radacanu, the keen go-karter, as she kept the home flag flying in the ladies singles on her Wimbledon debut.

The last Briton standing in the ladies’ draw is still walking tall after defeating Czech Marketa Vondrousova 6-2 6-4 to earn a third-round clash with Sorana Cirstea, Romanian conqueror of 12th seed Victoria Azarenka,

And Murray tweeted: “Let’s go @EmmaRaducanu”.

Raducanu, 18, is fast turning into a teenage sensation with her performances in London SW19 in her first major.

She was taking her A levels in April but her performances have more than made the grade.

Her ranking of 338 will soar with her bank balance – collecting £115,000, four times her career earnings – after defeating former French Open finalist Vondrousova, world-ranked 41.

Raducanu only made her WTA Tour debut last month but the Fed Cup player is already being touted as the future of women’s tennis in Britain.

She proved her first-round victory over Russian Vitalia Diatchenko was no flash in the pan.

Her aggressive tactics, attempting to dictate play, paid off as her left-handed opponent struggled to cope as the crowd roared on the home player on Court 12.

In fact, left-hander Vondrousa, 22, seemed distracted by the fervour of support as Raducanu sealed the first set after winning five games in a row.

The Czech seemed to get it together to take a 3-0 lead in the second, but Raducanu remained unfazed, battling back with a combination of big-hitting and a calm temperament.

And when she clinched the match after Vondrousa dumped a forehand into the net, her smile lit up the court and Wimbledon.

Raducanu is the youngest Brit to make the third round since the late Elena Baltacha in 2002.

Simon Reed, the experienced BBC commentator, said: “What a day, what a player. What a prospect. It’s been a super journey so far, but the graph accelerates almost vertically from this point.”
