Rouen | Garcia advances after Rus upsets Pavlyuchenkova

Thursday at the Open Capfinances Rouen Metropole, the WTA 250 tournament in France this week, saw Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands topple Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the No 1 seed from Russia, but Caroline Garcia and Anhelina Kalinina had an easier time of it, winning through to the quarter-finals in straight sets.

In a marathon encounter lasting 2 hours 13 minutes, Rus upset Pavlyuchenkova, the World No 22, 6-3 1-6 6-3, in the Round of 16, winning 7 of 13 break points, breaking the Russian’s serve 7 times and capitalising on six double-faults from her opponent.

Garcia, the No 2 seed from France, raced through her contest with Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova on Thursday evening, winning 6-1 6-0 in just 48 minutes, and will face Romanian qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse, ranked 162, in the next round, who upset Clara Burel, the 7th seed, also from France, 6-0 2-6 6-3.

Meanwhile, 3rd-seeded Kalinina from Ukraine beat Martina Trevisan, 6-2 6-3, the Italian having put paid to Naomi Osaka’s return hopes in the 1st-round.

Kalinina, ranked No 32, takes on 16-year old Russian prodigy Mirra Andreeva, the 5th seed, for a place in the semi-finals.

No 4 seed Yuan Yue from China survived a 2-hour, 47-minute encounter with Varvara Gracheva, the Russian-born Frenchwoman, prevailing 6-4 4-6 7-6(6) after saving 2 straight match points in the 3rd-set tiebreak.

In the doubles, Britain’s Samantha Murray Sharan and her partner Katarzyna Piter from Poland reached the quarter-finals with a 7-5 6-0 win over American Quinn Gleason & Dalila Jakupovis from Slovenia, while Naiktha Bains & Maia Lumsden play on Friday for a place in the Last 8.
