The WTA 250 event at ’s-Hertogenbosch, the Libema Open, has been plagued by the weather but Thursday saw the quarter-final line-up completed, and while top seeds Aryna Sabalenka and Belinda Bencic came safely through, other seeds, Elena Rybakina, Tamara Zidansek and Elise Mertens all tumbled out.
World No 6 Sabalenka from Belarus secured her second victory of the week on the grass with a 6-2 6-3 win over Arianne Hartono, ranked 172 from the Netherlands and will next play Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck, ranked 46, who upset her countrywoman, No 8 seed Mertens, by exactly the same score, 6-2 6-3.
Second-seeded Bencic of Switzerland defeated Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya, 7-6(2) 6-4, and will play 6th-seeded Veronika Kudermetova, who dropped the first set but advanced when fellow Russian Anna Blinkova was forced to pull out in the second set with the score standing at 5-7, 5-2 Retired.
No 7 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, also from Russia, advanced in straight sets over Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina, 6-4 6-2, and she will now play American Catherine McNally, who ousted 4th-seeded Zidansek from Slovenia, 6-1 6-1, in just 61 minutes.
Another American Shelby Rogers took out the No 3 seed, Rybakina, 6-2 6-4, taking full advantage 5 double-faults to roll past the Kazakh in the Round of 16 to set up a quarter-final meeting with Kirsten Flipkens from Belgium, who swept past yet another American Ann Li, 6-1 6-1.
