San Jose | Konta reaches Quarter-finals
Jo Konta notched up her second win in as many days by seeing off Sofia Kenin 6-1 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose.
Konta, who handed Serena Williams the worst defeat of her career last Tuesday for the loss of just one game, was certainly on a roll.
I just played the challenge of the day and the opponent that I had and really just tried to do the best that I can Jo Konta
Her victory over Kenin came in two sets of 36 minutes each, with the Briton breaking the American’s first service game for a 3-0 lead and then again for 5-1.
The former top-ten player who has slipped to world number 48, then saved a break point and served out the set.
A break to love in the fifth game of the second set was enough to seal the match in straight sets.
Whilst accepting her last victory had been the best win of her career, the British No.1 was not letting it distract her from the job in hand.
“I think I put to bed yesterday’s result and also the things I did well and things I wanted to do better. I just approached today as a separate challenge because it was. I just played the challenge of the day and the opponent that I had and really just tried to do the best that I can,” she said as she prepare for her next match against the fourth seeded Elise Mertens for a place in the semi-finals.
