Seoul | Evans and Penniston crash out

It wasn’t a good day for the Brits at the Korea Open in Seoul, wit both Dan Evans and Ryan Penniston suffering first round defeats.

Penniston made the main draw as a Lucky Loser and while he put up a brave fight, wasn’t able to get past the Chilean qualifier, Nicolas Jarry losing 6-3 7-6(8) whogoes on toface the top seeded Norwegian Casper Ruud.

Dan Evans, seeded fifth for the event, also lost in straight sets to Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka, a player he has never beaten in five previous meetings.

This time the world number 25 lost 6-3 7-6(3) to the world number 56 after one-hour and 49-minutesfor his sixth loss.

Cameron Norrie is now the only Brit in the draw and as the second seed, received an opening round bye but will face another Japanese player, Kaichi Uchida, a wild card entry, who beat Seong-chan Hong of Korea, another wild card, 6-4 6-2.

In other action, Jenson Brooksby of the US, the eighth seed, eventually got past a gritty challenge from a qualifier from Taipei, Tung-Lin Wu 7-6(5) 3-6 6-0 and will face Soonwoo Kwon of Korea, a 7-6(5) 6-7(3) 6-1 winner over compatriot Yunseong Chung, a qualifier, in round two.

However, the only other seed in action on Tuesday, Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic (7), tamely lost out to Lucky Loser from the US, Aleksandra Kovacevic 6-4 6-4

Also through to the second round are two Americans, Mackenzie McDonald and Steve Johnson, plus Radu Albot from Moldovia and Spain’s Jaume Munar
