Sharma beats Dart in Guadalajara, twice

Britain’s Harriet Dart lost twice to the same player at the WTA 250 tournament being played in Guadalajara in Mexico this week, Australian Astra Sharma, firstly in the second round of qualifying and then, as a lucky loser, in the first round of the main draw.

Dart held a match point in the 3rd set in their second meeting, before losing 2-6 6-2 7-6(2).

After a 6-3 6-2 win over Dart in the final round of qualifying, Sharma was made to work hard in Monday’s 2 hour, 19-minute contest.

Sharma held serve just once in the 29-minute first set, finally asserting her authority as she broke Dart’s serve in the opening game of the second.

Despite dropping serve again in the 4th game of that set, Sharma claimed the last 4 games to send the match into a third-set decider.

Chasing her first main draw match win of the 2021 season, a determined Sharma saved a match point in the 10th game.

The Australian, ranked World No 137 to the No 153 Brit, finally secured victory on her 2nd match point in the tiebreak.

In the second round, Sharma faces Canada’s Layla Fernandez or Russian Anna Kalinskaya, who play on Tuesday.

Nao Hibino , the 5th seed from Japan, was upset on the first day of main draw play by Slovakian Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova, 6-1 7-5, who will next meet home favourite, Renata Zarazua.

The Mexican wild card defeated Katarzyna Kawa of Poland, 7-6(7) 6-0.

Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu ousted Coco Vandeweghe from the US in a match that was completed just a minute shy of the 3-hour mark, 7-6(4) 6-7(5) 6-2.

In the second round, Buzarnescu will play second seed Marie Bouzkova from the Czech Republic, who took down another Romanian, Irina Bara, 6-3 2-6 6-3, in their first-round meeting.

Lauren Davis from the US advanced to the second round after posting a 7-5 6-4 win over Germany’s Anna-Lena Friedsam.

The American qualifier will take on 6th seed Danka Kovinic next after the Montenegrin beat Varvara Gracheva from Russia, 3-6 6-4 7-5, in 2 hours and 22 minutes in their first-round match.

Italian qualifier Elisabetta Cocciaretto defeated Xiyu Wang from China to take her place in the second round after an hour and 37 minutes of battling, 6-4 6-4.

Either top-seed Nadia Podoroska from the Argentine or Mexican qualifier Giuliana Olmos could be Cocciaretto’s next opponent.
