Surbiton Trophy | Rybarikova foils Watson at final hurdle

The British number two, Heather Watson, playing in only her second grasscourt final lost to the Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova 6-4 7-5 in the final of the Aegon Surbiton Trophy.

Not the trophy I wanted but great first week on grass. If somebody had told me that I was going to make a final in my first week on grass I would have taken it. I think its great to play here for the first time. Heather Watson

Breaking Watson just the once in the opening set proved enough for the Slovak to claim it and go with two more breaks in the second, to stand serving for the match at 5-4.
Watson raised her game to break Rybarikova at her third attempt but then failed to hold her own again allowing her opponent to serve out, this time successfully.
Watson said: “Not the trophy I wanted but great first week on grass. If somebody had told me that I was going to make a final in my first week on grass I would have taken it. I think its great to play here for the first time.”
In the men’s final, Japan’s Yuichi Sugita beat Jordan Thompson, of Australia, 7-6(7) 7-6(8).
