Thiem targets Olympics

Dominic Thiem at 27-years of age, has decided to include the Tokyo Olympics in his 2021 schedule having opted out of representing Austria at the last two Games

The Austrian who ended the year ranked three in the world, didn’t participate in London 2012 and Rio 2016 and wasn’t going to play this year at Tokyo 2020 but, as it has been postponed by 12 months because of the coronavirus pandemic, he now says he can fit The Games into his 2021 schedule.

The ATP have still to confirm next season’s calendar while fas also await news as to when the Australian Open is to be played if not starting on the 18th January as scheduled.

Thiem. Who has been working with Nicolas Masu these past two years, is keen to emulate the emotions of winning at the Olympics which the Chilean experienced when he won gold at both the singles and doubles gold in Athens 2004.

“I am going to participate at the Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo starting on July 23,” Thiem revealed in a post on his website.

“I have been thinking about it for a longer period of time, and next year it eventually fits into my tournament schedule.

“I am looking forward to it to compete for a medal. My coach Nicolas Massu won two gold medals in Athens in 2004, he told me about the incredibly wonderful emotions.

“I want to feel these kind of emotions myself. For an athlete the atmosphere at the Olympics must be unique, I want to soak it all up.”

The Austrian has already fulfilled his dream of joining the roster of Grand Slam champions having reached three previous finals before capturing the US Open crown last September to become the first player outside the trio of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer to win a major since 2016.

More recently he reached the final of the ATP Finals in London losing out to Daniil Medvedev. He said at the time that he was disappointed at losing out in the last match of the season but despite that, he went on to admit he was happy with his season.
