Donna Vekic has revealed on social media that she has undergone minor knee surgery following the Australian Open.
I had a small surgery on my right knee yesterday. Already started my rehab today and look forward to being back on court soon. Donna Vekic
The 24-year-old Croatian reached the 4th round in Melbourne for the first time in her career but when she was down a set against Jennifer Brady, Vekic took a medical timeout and returned with heavy strapping around her right knee.
A member of the WTA Players’ Council, Vekic has been at the forefront of the tour’s response to the global pandemic that cancelled tournaments throughout last spring and summer.
“I’ve been talking to other players, and I think the WTA, ATP, we all need to come up with a better solution, of how we’re going to get through this year,” she said. “If we have to be in bubbles for every tournament, I can tell you players are going to go insane.”
Vekic had the surgical procedure in Germany and has not given any indication as to when she might return to the WTA Tour.
“I had a small surgery on my right knee yesterday,” she said on social media. “Already started my rehab today and look forward to being back on court soon.”
She is ranked No 29 in the world but has been as high as No 19, and has won two singles titles in her career.
