Defending champion Daniil Medvedev led the top seeds into the quarter finals of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, Austria, by defeating Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov 3-6 6-2 6-4.

“I managed to have small control of the match, but it was very tough and could have gone either way. I’m very happy I managed to do it. Daniil Medvedev

The Russian recovered well from dropping the opening set by immediately taking a 4-1 lead in the second and then breaking Dimitrov at 4-all in the third.

The Bulgarian had just one break chance after breaking Medvedev three times in the opener.

“It was a great match,” said Medvedev on court. “He started really well and I was missing just a little bit too much. He was ahead and, starting from the second set, I started to play better, to run better, to put more balls in the court and play faster when I needed to.

“I managed to have small control of the match, but it was very tough and could have gone either way. I’m very happy I managed to do it.”

Medvedev will face countryman Karen Khachanov in the quarter finals on Friday whom he leads 4-1 in their personal clashes.

Meanwhile fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas won a tight one over the Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac 6-3 4-6 7-5 with the Greek having to pick himself up in the third when trailing 1-3, breaking at 5-all before going on to win his place in the last eight after one-hour and 58-minutes.

Second-seeded Jannik Sinner eased past his Italian countryman Lorenzo Sonego 6-2 6-4 and will take on Frances Tiafoe of the US who recovered from a set down to take out the Stockholm champion Gael Monfils 5-7 6-1 6-4.

Aso through is the third seed Andrey Rublev who beat Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi 7-5 6-3 — a win which cements his place in the Turin finals.

Borna Goljo, a Croatian wild card, recorded the biggest upset of the day when he eliminated the American Tommy Paul, the sixth seed, 6-3 6-4 and will try to continue his progress when he next faces Tsitsipas in the quarters..
