Wimbledon | Monfils fells Querrey

SAM Querrey joined the list of seeds to fall at Wimbledon when he was defeated by Gael Monfils in their third-round Centre Court showdown.

Unseeded Monfils reached the last 16 for the first time at the tenth attempt by demolishing the 11th seed 5-7 6-4 6-4 6-2.

I tried to serve well to dictate. I tried to dictate his serve. Go for it. Even when I was losing the first set I thought I was playing well Gael Monfils

And he will face Kevin Anderson, who defeated Philipp Kohlschrieber in straight sets.

Monfils said: “I’m very happy. I’ve been chasing that (a last 16 place) for a long time.”

The Frenchman had to bounce back from a set down despite an early injury problem.

But he was able to get a grip on the big serve of his giant American opponent who made the semi-finals after beating Andy Murray last year.

And showed consistency, a quality the flamboyant Gallic, who has tumbled down the rankings, has often lacked.

It was most noticeable in what proved to be the deciding set as he finished it with no unforced errors to Querrey’s ten.

He said: “I tried to serve well to dictate. I tried to dictate his serve. Go for it.

“Even when I was losing the first set I thought I was playing well.”

Seeds Marin Cilic, Grigor Dimitrov, Dominic Thiem and Richard Gasquet had already been scattered this week.
